Las Vegas is one of only a few cities in the United States where we experience such drastic changes in temperature from summer to winter. From temperatures consistently exceeding 100 degrees during the summer to winters so cold that your pool plumbing could freeze, Las Vegas has a unique set of challenges in each season.
Maintaining a pool through the hot Las Vegas summer months can be difficult due to a combination of different factors, including the high temperatures, direct sunlight, and increased pool usage. The high temperatures and direct sunlight actually weaken the effectiveness of your pool's sanitizing agent (typically chlorine) and raise the temperature of the water. Collectively, these two factors working together will create ideal conditions for algae and bacteria growth.
Additionally, the intense heat in Las Vegas evaporates water rapidly, which will cause the water to become more saturated with certain chemicals and minerals (the most impactful of which are cyanuric acid and calcium). Not only do these chemicals make it difficult to manage water chemistry, but they can build up within pool equipment and cause damage to internal components. There's no way to remove these chemicals aside from draining the pool. For this reason, we recommend draining our pools at least every other year.
Lastly, every time you use the pool you are introducing new bacteria, phosphates, and other chemicals into the water, many of which can contribute to algae growth or negatively impact the ability of the chlorine to do its job.
In the winter, the biggest concern is freezing. In Las Vegas, temperatures will regularly drop below the freezing level in the middle of a cold night. If the water within your pool equipment or plumbing freezes, it can cause significant damage to your system. The best way to avoid freezing is to continue circulating water throughout the night, typically by running your pump on its lowest setting (if you have a variable-speed pump).
Separate from the issue of freezing, your pool will typically accumulate more debris, leaves, branches, and dust during the winter. While this usually doesn't present any immediate issue to the safety of the water chemistry of the pool equipment, it does require more time to remove the debris by skimming or vacuuming.
